Our foundation is set
As I reflect on the election and what will be our future, I fear very little. I am proud to be an American. Can you truly appreciate the growth our young nation is undergoing? How cool is it that we are living in a historical moment? The majority of our nation is rallying behind the two primary party’s candidates - which 100 years ago would not have been on a local political platform, let alone national!
Regardless the election results, our future is before us and it is our obligation to make the most of our resources. (…and to make use of this nice transition…)
At the October Dinner Meeting, the Toledo Chapter utilized its resources - Bruce Barth, ASQ Toledo Education Chair [and Ford Master Black Belt], offered a case study of using Lean Six Sigma in the Insurance Industry. It was eye-opening to hear about the redundancies and waste (muda) in an industry that affects each of us at least a few times in our life.
The company name was protected (and it is not their fault, because they were innocent to the power of critical thinking and looking at their processes for effective and efficient improvements) because until you understand the Lean and Six Sigma steps - how can anyone appreciate “those” tools of a quality professional.
Company cultures, workarounds, practices that are out dated, managers that were promoted from the same teachings are just a few hurdles we all face. It was a great presentation and my special thanks to Bruce (and his son for letting his Dad share) his Black Belt project. …and as Bruce stated, his son was a past recipient of one of the Section’s Scholarship Awards a few years ago.
Funny how that came back around… The citizens of the United States of America will remain strong because of the foundation set before us and the membership of Toledo ASQ will remain strong as the 59-year foundation of our section has been set before us.
On November 20th, I hope many of you will consider visiting Penta and tour their new facility. And if you miss the tour, I believe I can share from all the members of your ASQ Executive Committee, we wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Many blessings,
Bob Mason
ASQ Co-Chair, 2008-2009
