Toledo ASQ - 60 Years of Quality

As Historian, I can report on just bits and pieces of our local sections past. The Toledo Section has a wonderful history, but not everything was kept for prosperity.

One of the earliest monthly newsletters "Qualiteer" from May 1966 had cartoon characters (like Batman, Robin, the Wizard of ID, etc) inviting members to the next ASQ drag. One character stated "I want to go to the ASQC meeting". Another replied "Look at it this way, if you went you'd want to drink beer and stuff, that’s all those fellows do". Things were certainly different back then, but members made time to spend together for events like Family Day at Put-In-Bay or getting away to a cottage at Devils Lake. We didn't take everything so seriously back then either, another cartoon has a Batman and Robin spoof as Fighters of Defects and valiant crusaders against Quality Costs and Out-of-spec parts.

We fast forward to the 70's where membership increased, due to recruiting campaigns or attitude adjustment seminars (held by the bartenders just before dinner was served). Conferences were held locally and involved Toledo's mayor and Dorian Shanin. Scholarships began to be awarded and we still maintained a sense of humor.

In the 80's Phil Crosby spoke to a joint meeting with other sections, membership continued to increase and tours were frequent. This is the era where customers complained about a lack of Quality and the UAW began "Quality is Job 1" with one of our automakers. The newsletter "Qualiteer" continued with quips, humorous management laws and inspiring quotes.

The 90's seem to be busier. The humor, quotes and cartoons disappeared, the "Qualiteer" became more serious, perhaps a reflection of the emphasis on improving quality in the automotive industry.   Customers became consumers although we focused upon our customer wants, we became distanced from them. This is when I got involved in the Toledo ASQ and became acquainted with the other members. Many were older and had "learned the ropes", they were always cheerful and encouraging.

The 21st Century has certainly had an impact on Quality and ASQ. I'm sure that you are aware of the changes around us not only the past several months, but since the dot.com and 911 events our world has changed. We are all busier in a global society. Since this is the only chance we get to make history, we need to continuously improve our skill set, use our training and tools to impact the products and services we touch, making them second to none. Perhaps someday we'll be remembered like Shewhart, Deming and Juran. But don't forget to laugh at yourself occasionally and keep humor as our best friend.

Robert Hilding
