 ABOUT TOLEDO ASQ SECTION 1006

The Toledo Section 1006 of the American Society for Quality Control was founded in July 1949 soon after ASQC was established in February 1946. The founders of the Toledo section envisioned a proactive organization to advance quality in the Toledo area.

From that beginning until today, Toledo ASQ has held conferences, educational sessions, dinner meetings and plant tours for their members. Speakers at these events have included W. Edwards Deming, Frank Gryna, Phil Crosby and Shin Taguchi. In the 1960's this included Christmas parties for couples and Put-in-bay cruises. An editorial from the August 1965 newsletter stated "psychological motivation of workers to attain pride and perfection in their work strikes at the very heart and source of defects, and is one of the most useful and underexploited tools of quality control". In the 1970's the section had Management night, where management was invited and reminded of the importance of quality. To keep interest, there were activities like Harvest Ball, Sweetheart night (valentines) and Steak Roast at a Devils Lake cottage. Quality basic courses were offered to non-members, refresher courses, scholarships and member recognition for certifications were promoted. Annual conferences included the Toledo mayor proclaiming Quality Control week at a news conference with Dorian Shainin which was covered by local TV stations and papers.

In the 1980's a membership increase caused this section to join BGSU and Monroe County Community College to offer quality courses. Our section spun off Fostoria and Top-of-Ohio Bryan sections in 1992. A student section was created at BGSU in 1996 and continues to flourish today. The 50th anniversary of ASQ was celebrated here with a special week-long Midwest Quality Conference. Owens College also began offering quality courses in association with our section.

We recognize our leaders with the Toulouse Award – named for early Toledo section member Julian Toulouse and awarded since 1960 as the utmost honor to a local Section member having qualified under the rules for highest attainment during the current year. The award is based upon Society activity, Professional attainment and community activity

Today, Quality is recognized not only in manufacturing, but also in local healthcare and food industries, government and education organizations. As our membership base grows more diverse this section meets their needs by offering cost effective training and activities for our members. Won't you consider making history by volunteering your time to serve with your fellow quality practitioners to improve lives, jobs and community from membership in ASQ.
